American Union Elementary School was recently chosen by Leadership Fresno’s Class 34 as their community project. Leadership Fresno is a program of the Fresno County Chamber of Commerce and seeks to bring together the community’s top professionals to “learn more about their city, network with other like-minded individuals, and work together to improve their surroundings.” Class 34 is excited to be working with American Union to bring to life four unique projects for the school.

The Dude. Be Nice. Program is a national program that the school has embraced.  The program is designed to inspire students to build a positive community by recognizing a person or group in a fun, creative, and meaningful way. Class 34 plans to help AU students and school staff expand the program.

Class 34 also plans to host a Literacy Fair near end of the school year that will include opportunities for community engagement and participation. Plans for the fair include book giveaways for summer reading, special guest appearances by local authors, activities for families, and a financial literacy workshop for parents.

AU is excited that Class 34 plans to help the school build a Community Learning Garden to be able to provide fresh produce to families and community members. Currently AU is hoping to work with Class 34 to build a small vegetable garden with drip irrigation. Students will have the opportunity to visit the garden at different times during the program to learn about agriculture and irrigation.

Finally, Class 34 wants to help AU put up two shade structures so that students have more places to eat outside on hot days. WUSD is excited about this new partnership and the opportunities that it will provide our students.
