WUSD Celebrates Black History Month

February marked Black History Month in the United States and Washington Unified Schools celebrated with events and activities at every site.  Washington Union High School’s Black Student Union (BSU) members designed a cross-curricular lesson for West Fresno Elementary students. BSU members prepared and taught the younger students about Black History through engaging art projects.

West Fresno Middle School hosted a door decorating competition, celebrating the achievements of notable African Americans throughout history.  The WFMS Journalism Class won this year’s competition with their creation: “The West Fresno Journal” which featured a series of informational articles researched, written, and created by students.

The West Fresno Elementary School campus was decorated with posters featuring both well known and lesser known historical figures in an effort to teach students about the many contributions of Black Americans.  The students also attended an all-school assembly which celebrated the opportunities that todays’ students’ have as a result of the efforts of Civil Rights pioneers; such as, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and President Barack Obama.

On February 22, the Washington Union BSU hosted a staff luncheon featuring traditional African American cuisine.  Parents and staff prepared the meal which was enjoyed by over 100 staff members. BSU students welcomed attendees and created the celebratory atmosphere enjoyed by all present.
