On February 27th, the Washington Unified School District held its’ first annual Reclassification Ceremony honoring the achievements of students throughout the district.

Each year, students who are English Learners (ELs) work hard to be reclassified as “Fluent English Proficient” as demonstrated through 4 criteria: 1) Basic Skills, 2)  English Proficiency, 3) Teacher Evaluation, and 4) Parent Notification.  As part of the District’s Structured English Immersion (SEI) Program, EL students are supported with in-class English language instruction and designated English Language Development (ELD) instruction.  In the Spring, school staff administers the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC).  The ELPAC is a rigorous series of exams that measure language skills through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Those students who score a 4 are eligible for consideration for reclassification.

This year, we are proud that 57 students qualified for reclassification.  In an effort to celebrate this achievement, the district hosted a red-carpet style ceremony at the District Office.  Students and their families were invited, along with staff and teachers.  Honorees received a certificate of achievement, commemorative photograph, and were gifted a book, donated by the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools Migrant Education program.

Washington Unified is proud of these students and their families for their continued efforts towards academic success.
